Quilting Tools for Christmas

The art of quilting has been a tradition since then and it evokes memories of a deceased loved one; it had been a way for many to use threads as a binding tool for families from time to time. A quilt maker has a choice of quilting by hand or using any of the following quilting tools. I have tested using these quilting tools and now, recommending them to you so you will be able to come up with a masterpiece quilt block.

Fons and Porter Mechanical Fabric Pencil, White

“This pencil works great. The marks are nice and sharp. It erases much better than the Sewline Mechanical Fabric Pencil Pink version. However, this doesn’t feel as good as the Sewline version in my hand. I also wish it came in more colors. You’ll never want to use a plain marking pencil again.”

Omnigrid Invisible Grip Roll, 12-1/2 by 36- Inch

Quilting Tool for ChristmasOmnigrid Invisi-Grip is a clear, non-slip material that is applied to the underside of rulers, cutting mats and templates. Invisi-Grip keeps your ruler from slipping and sliding. Simply cut to size, peel off carrier paper and apply to ruler. Removes easily without leaving a residue. Roll measures 12-1/2 by 36-inch. If you want to purchase this tool, click here.

“I had tried the little rubber adhesive backed feet and the sandpaper dots, but I was still searching for the perfect solution to the slippery backs of the quilting rulers. For me, this doesn’t seem to be it. In a class I took 2 or 3 years ago our instructor told us about this product and how wonderful it is. I bought two packages to make sure I had enough to cover the backs of all my rulers–I have more rulers than I really need. The application didn’t go quite as smoothly as the instructions indicated. It just didn’t want to stick to some of the rulers (all of which were the same Omnigrid brand). It is supposed to work on the principle of static cling, I guess, but I ended up having to dampen some of the rulers to make this product stick. There is no adhesive involved. This is a plus when it comes to removal if you decide not to keep it on your rulers–no sticky backs–but then, maybe that would be the solution I am looking for.”

Omnigrid Glow Line Tape, Pink/Orange/Yellow

Quilting Tools for ChristmasOmnigrid Glow-Line Transparent Tape is makes it easy to find measurements and shapes, especially when rotary cutting repetitive pieces. It’s easy to use! You can use either underneath or on top of Invisi-Grip. Includes 3 colors; Pink, Orange, and Yellow, that all show up on all fabrics. Do you want to purchase this? Click here.

“I am very happy with the Glow Line Tape. I have used it on a Shape Cut ruler. In order to be sure I am cutting the right width, I have marked all the 2-inch slits with one color, all the 2.5-inch slits with another color, and all the 3-inch slits with the third color. This product saves a lot of confusion and wasted fabric. I like that I can reuse strips of the tape by moving them from one place on the ruler to another without it losing its ability to adher to a plastic ruler. When I first unrolled a piece of tape, it looked too faded, but when placed on the ruler it was easy to see and to distinguish from the other colors.”

Helpful Tips for Making a Patchwork Quilt

If you want a quality patchwork quilt, you need to remember that not all fabrics are suitable for quilting. Some fabrics cannot be used for quilting while others can give you best results. Choosing a wrong type of fabric would only waste your time and effort in quilting.

How to Quilt for Beginners

Quilting is a fun and exciting activity for beginners. However, you may not enjoy the fun if you wrongfully selected a fabric. The results may be poor if you start with a wrong fabric or it may need repairing after you sew the fabric. These are only possible results of a wrong selection of fabrics in quilting. So be careful with this.

Let’s take a look on some helpful tips for making a quality patchwork quilt.

  1. Flexibility and Accuracy

Accuracy is a very important skill in the art of patchwork and quilting. If you want to come up with a masterpiece, you need to use some of the best Quilting tools like rotary cutter.

In the market today, you can purchase many sewing machines that will enable you to make accurate quilt blocks and Patchworks. These machines double the capacity of old machines, allowing you to create a dozen of quilt blocks in an hour. Almost all the machine manufacturers provide books with free quilt patterns to their customers.

If you are starting your quilting career, you can search in the Internet some basic and popular quilt patterns. Also, you can visit here for more free libraries, video tutorials and instructions on quilting.

2. Purpose and Materials

Remember that the first thing you need to know when a starting quilt block is to determine its purpose. Because this will help you choose the right fabric materials such as cotton and design as well. Color, which is another great factor in design, can only be determined by knowing the purpose of the quilt.

3. Prints and Design

With prints and design, you need to vary the prints so as to look your quilt block in a modern way. If you want an old “country style” look, you can mix and match colors to do the trick. You can choose from small to medium and to large prints to help you express the emotion you want your quilt to give.

There are a lot more tips that you need to know when you’re starting out a quilt block. Choices should be made before quilting and best results will follow.

How to Find Free Basic Quilting Patterns Online

basic-quilt-patternsThroughout history, women had shaped their community with designs, patterns and experiences related to quilting. It is their way to engage with other people without accusing them of wasting their time. Not only did they use quilting as a social tool, they also created crafts out of small off-cuts to sell in the market.

Today, there is a present quilting community that can be reached by anyone even if they are afar. With the use of Internet, beginners and experts in the field of quilting used to share their own knowledge and experiences on how to make basic quilt patterns. Videos and written tutorials are now the best tools to help people who are starting in this niche. One of the online quilting communities that you can interact with is the Online Quilting Membership site. This free to sign up website welcomes you into a community of both beginners and experts in quilting. Links for libraries, and instructional videos are also available in the site. Click here to see some of those libraries.

What to Look for in a Quilting Site?

  1. Free patterns. If you are just starting out your own quilt projects, you need to look for a site with free quilt samples. There are numerous sites in Google when you type in the keyword, “free quilting patterns”. Some of those sites have categories on it like holiday quilts and basic quilting patterns. You could find quilt blocks that are good for seasons like “Christmas quilt pattern” and “Halloween quilt pattern”.  Any quilt patterns on the site are good as long as they are free.

Below is a free basic quilting pattern. Watch this video and make your first quilting project!

2.  Forum. “No man is an island”. This popular quotation pertains to all people of any kind. Quilting alone is boring and will not help you come up with the best masterpiece. You must be with someone who will help you in some ways. A site with forum groups people and discuss to them common questions people are asking for. In a quilting community, the usual topics are basic quilting patterns, best quilting sites and quilt shows and events. Forum will help you get an idea on what to write if you are blogger. While you’re a beginner in quilting, this is a good place for you to read step by step instructions in quilt blocks and view video links.

There are a lot of other factors you need to consider when looking for a site to subscribe and follow through. Aside from things mentioned above, you can get a lot more quilting ideas here.

Avoiding the Christmas Sewing Time Stress

There is never enough time in the best of circumstances.  The holidays just take that “too much to do, too little time” mantra to the extreme.

I try to not have too much last minute stress around the holidays.  As my children read that last line they will laugh.  I am always trying to finish up at the last minute, but I do try.

I think that a couple of considerations are in order.  Are thing due early.  Even though Christmas is always on December 25th, will some of the gifts need to be finished, wrapped and on their way early?

I will be seeing people for Thanksgiving that I will not see for Christmas.  It would be nice to deliver their gifts to them then, and avoid the mails.

Mailing gifts also takes a bit of pre-planning.  Not only do I need to get Christmas presents in the mail in time to be delivered to the recipients by Christmas, but if they are going somewhere else, the gifts need to arrive before the intended receivers leave for their holiday destinations.

To achieve all of this, it is necessary to also know and plan for the supplies all arriving in time.  This is just as true for the materials you are going out to purchase locally as for the stuff you order online.

And actually finishing up early allows you to enjoy a much less stressful holiday season.  Or so I’ve been told.

Where to Buy What

I have determined what I will need to buy for my Christmas sewing.  Now I need to figure out where to get it.

I am a huge advocate of the 3/50 project.  If you don’t know what that is, please go to http://www.the350project.net/home.html

Small business in the US provides employment for over half of the American population.  I assume that it is a large part of other countries as well.  When the economy is hurting, these are the folks that feel it the most.  Please support your local small businesses.

So, my first inclination is to scope out my local quilt shop.  I am always amazed there by the wonderful fabrics they get in.

If I can’t find what I am looking for there, I will walk in to a big box fabric place, but only out of desperation.

I also do quite a bit of shopping online.  I like the selection and the prices, but, sometimes I have problems with colors.  It is a great alternative and the home delivery makes up for the time delay.

There are so many options for us and I encourage you to explore all of them.

Taking Stash Inventory

A quick, or not so quick, search through my stash of fabrics with my Christmas gift list in hand, allows me to inventory what I will be using that I already have, versus what I will have to buy.

The criteria I have for determining what I have to go out for is whether or not what I have matches with what I want.  As I fabric shop with people I sew for in mind, I generally have quite a bit on hand.

Is the material I have perfectly matched to what I had in mind for that specific person?  If not, do I have designs that I can substitute in?

When I can’t find something in my own personal quilt shop, I will have to go out to buy something.

If I could get away with doing all of my Christmas sewing straight from my stash, my husband would think he was in heaven.  Reality is much grimmer for him.

But, not for me!  I get to go fabric shopping!

How Much Fabric is Necessary for My Christmas Sewing?

When I know how many of each item I am sewing, I work on the materials lists.  I am currently about half way through figuring out what each piece is going to take in reference to fabric, time and other materials.

Sometimes by making multiples from the same fabrics, I will use less materials per piece than if I only did one.  It will be difficult to figure that reduction into the overall needs, but I will probably just have leftovers.

“My scrap bag is almost empty and I need more scraps to put into it.” Said no quilter, ever!

I will also have to consider whether the same supplies can be used in different Christmas sewing projects.  I am sewing pillowcases and earbud cases.  I will be able to use some of the same fabrics for both groups of gifts.

All in all, this process is a guessing game at best.  The key is to buy too much, rather than too little.

Determining My To Do List

Accumulating the supplies I need to begin my Christmas sewing requires a bit of planning.  The first part of the plan is to figure out my To Do List.

Since I have already made up the people who will be getting Christmas gifts and entered them into my Christmas Notebook, now I am finalizing who gets what.

Once I have that decided, I move on to what it will take in supplies to make the items that I am giving.

I generally sew in bunches, 15 table runners, 30 Christmas Stockings, 45 pillowcases.  This simplifies buying the materials, for the most part.

Although the pillowcases will be individually designed, they will all take the same amount of fabric and some of the same fabrics can be used for different people.

Therefore the biggest question is how many of what am I making.  And what are the requirements for each and the total?

No (or little) Thought Sewing Machine Maintenance

In giving this new plan of attack some extra thought, I have come to the conclusion that having my machine serviced just before Christmas sewing will work out really well.

Remembering when I am supposed to schedule things is not one of my string suits.

Whether we are talking about Dr. follow ups, property tax payments, magazine subscription renewals or sewing machine maintenance, I just have a defective chronology gene somewhere.

I do know that the holidays are approaching each year.  Goodness, they start Christmas advertising in July!  And I do start planning for the sewing sometime in late summer.

So, knowing that I need to get my machine serviced in early fall, I don’t really have to remember when it last happened, when it needs to happen again, and when I have time to be without my machines.

Proactive Rather Than Reactive Sewing

This year is new and different for me.  I decided, preemptively, to take my machines in to be serviced at a time when I didn’t have hard deadlines staring me in the face.

I hope this new found scheduling idea will result in avoiding the crisis of being without a machine.  Maybe I can go an entire holiday season avoiding the panic of machine not working.

And best of all, I can be without my sewing machines at a time when I can do the non-sewing preparations.

No sewing machine in the next room does give me a bit of the shakes.  I keep walking by the room anxious that there is something I should be sewing.

However, I know that I have preparations in hand, my machine will be back shortly and the rest of my projects will flow more easily.
